This robotic platform enables manufacturing automation, construction automation, service automation, and safe human-robot interaction (co-robotics). This general-purpose robot is designed to do tasks that humans would normally be required to do. This addresses the pain points of low-cost robotics that can automate work for small batch production, customization (unique batch of 1 production), and on demand production. Our solution includes a real-time, augmented reality, avatar control system that can be used to train the robot and operate it remotely manually. Our solution immerses the user in the environment of the robot visually, acoustically, tactilely, and with controls based on normal human movement.

Hughes Engineering submitted SBIR Phase 1 2018 proposal to the National Science Foundation for EW4: Robotics in Agile Manufacturing, and Co-Robots. Solicitation Number: NSF 18-593

Proposal addresses next-generation automation, the flexible and rapid reconfiguration of assembly lines allowing mass customization, the use of advanced control, scheduling, modularization, and decentralization with agile, mobile robotic systems that can enable the cost-effective manufacture of small lot-size products, and on-demand parts manufacturing.

ANA Avatar XPRIZE is a four-year global competition focused on the development of an Avatar System that will transport a human’s sense, actions, and presence to a remote location, in real time, to a physical Robotic Avatar operated by a person (Operator) and interacting with an environment or a person at a distance (Recipient).
